Bring My Best

It’s difficult to keep me up past 10 o’clock, but Game 7 of the World Series did just that. The game itself was entertaining with moments where the championship could have been won and then was denied. But the backstory of individual talent, high salaries and unlikely heroes made it even more fun to watch. So, you can understand why I see a link to today’s devotion.

In Matthew 25:14-30, Jesus uses a parable of gold coins (i.e. talents) to describe God’s expectations of us and what we do with the talents we received. In the story, a king generously hands out coins to three servants. Each servant is given a different amount and the focus is not on how much each one earns, but what each servant does with what he has been given. For the servants who invest what they have been given, they get a 100% return and even more opportunities for investment. For the guy who did nothing with what he was given…it was taken away. Yikes. I can relate. I often neglect opportunities that I feel the Holy Spirit prompting me to act because of fear of what others will think or believing it’s just my emotions and not God in the moment. There are so many times where the moment passes me by and I feel like the guy with the one coin who hid it. Not good. I need to daily prepare my heart to respond through prayer and devotion so I can see the opportunities and seize them!

So, just like 32 year old Miguel Rojas, a utility player for the Dodgers, who made incredible offensive and defensive plays to win the Series, may I discipline my heart to make myself available for God to use me to make huge impacts for those around me and the kingdom of God.
